Vinyl swimming pool liners come in many styles and grades. The Basic Types of Vinyl Swimming Pool Liners

The overlap type of vinyl liner is most commonly found on the above ground
round or oval swimming pools. The liner simply folds over the sheet wall
and a plastic coping strip holds it in place along with either metal stabilizers
or top tracks which go 
over
the plastic coping to secure the liner. The beaded type vinyl pool liner
is found on both inground and above ground vinyl liner pools. This type
of vinyl pool liner has a thick heat welded bead which is fitted into
the coping on the pool edge, either a metal or concrete coping. The specially
designed groove, called the bead receiver, is built into this coping and
accepts the liner bead securing the liner at the top of the pool. The
J-Hook vinyl pool liner has a grove (pocket) on top of the liner that
fits onto the pool wall corrugation.
Thickness - Does Your Vinyl Swimming Pool Liner Measure Up?
Vinyl liners can be of varying thickness. Most above ground pools sold today are equipped with a 15 or 16 gauge (mil) vinyl liner. There are other gauges available on the market. The most common type is a 20 mil. thickness. 20 mil. is the standard for most inground swimming pools, however, you can get a 20 mil liner for above ground swimming pools also. 25 and 30 gauge liners are also available for purchase. Generally speaking, these liners have a higher warranty period than the 15, 16, or 20 mil liners. Thickness doesn't always mean a longer liner life. Thickness acts as a protection against abuse by swimmers, degradation by the sun, and the many water toys and games you see. Thicker vinyl swimming pool liners are designed to take more abuse. You can expect to pay more for a thicker vinyl pool liner, but if your swimming pool sees a lot of action, knowing you have a heavy-duty liner can give you the peace of mind you desire.
Specialty Vinyl Swimming Pool Liners - What's Available?
Another type of above ground vinyl swimming pool liner is what is called
a variable-depth liner. A variable depth liner allows for 
the
pool bottom to be dug deeper in the center of an above ground pool in
an effort to increase overall depth in that area. The variable depth vinyl
pool liner is designed to stretch to account for the increase in depth
(the picture at right illustrates this point well). This type of liner
is usually available only in an overlap style. The other option available
in vinyl swimming pool liners is the wide variety of colors and patterns
available. Gone are the days of the solid blue pool liners. Pool liners
are available with tile boarders, an overall pattern, one pattern for
the walls and another for the floors, etc. The huge variety of vinyl swimming
pool liners allows you to give your pool a personal touch.
Patching Your Vinyl Liner, Why You Should Never Drain A Vinyl Liner Pool
The first thing you should know about vinyl swimming pool liners is that you should never drain your vinyl liner pool for any reason. Doing so could cause your vinyl pool liner to shrink upon refilling and become hard and brittle. The older the vinyl material is the more likely this is to happen. Most warranties will be VOID if you do drain your swimming pool. A clause that most vinyl liner manufacturers include on their warranty card. If you do have to patch a hole or puncture, there is no need to get too worried. You will not need to drain your pool as most patch kits are designed to work under water. When you patch a hole you should always cut the patch in a circle, no sharp corners ore edges, put the glue on the patch and apply to the liner or product you are patching. Be sure to smooth it off with your hand to get rid of any air in the back of the patch..
