Swimming Pool Maintenance & Chemicals - An Introduction
What
do you think of when you hear the word swimming
pool? While an image of crystal-clear pool water is a common image
to many, anybody who has ever seen the result of a neglected pool will
find images of green, debris filled, water difficult to forget! Swimming
pool maintenance, including correct chemical application is what will
keep this nightmare from playing out in your own backyard oasis. Thankfully,
it is easy to grasp the basics of what makes good pool water go bad and
how to prevent that from happing. By learning what you need to do (and
when you need to do it) you will actually spend LESS time caring for your
pool water than you would end up spending on correcting any situation
brought on by initial neglect.
The 3* Phases of Swimming Pool Maintenance (*or possibley
4)
Swimming pool maintenance can be broken into 4 distinct phases.
The first phase comes upon the initial set up or opening
of the pool for the season. The second phase is true maintenance meaning
the processes you perform on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis to keep
your pool water clean and equipment functioning properly. The third phase
is the swimming pool
closing phase which takes place at the end of every season. That should
be it (notice the * in the paragraph header). There is a 4th phase of
swimming pool maintenance which we hope you never have to endure. This
is the phase when something has gone wrong. (You leave for a long weekend
and return to find something green growning in your pool). Whatever the
reason, and there are many, for this phase, a general knowledge of what
causes these problems in your pool and how to avoid or correct them will
make the life of any pool owner much, much easier.
Water Chemistry - The Key To Proper Swimming Pool Mainenance
Relax!
Just because you failed that final exam in your high school chemistry
class doesn't mean you cannot own and care for your own pool. There are
only a few really important chemical levels you need to be aware of in
your own pool: pH, Total Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness are the 3 major
players and are talked about in detail in our article "Understanding
Swimming Pool Water Chemistry". Once you have a basic understanding
of these 3 chemical levels you'll start to understand what makes your
pool water do what is does. The area in which you live and the water which
you use to fill your pool will be the two biggest factors in determining
the issues you will face in keeping your swimming pool in great shape.
The problems common to pool owners in Texas will differ from those who
own pools in Connecticut, and two pool owners who live across the street
may face different challenges if one fills his pool with city water and
the other with water from a well. For these reasons a general education
in pool water chemistry will serve
you well no matter what your situation is.
The Pool Maintenance Slogan: An Ounce of Prevention...
The good news is that pool maintenance is easy to do once it is understood.
The key is to develop a good routine and stick to it. The
Pool and Spa Library is full of articles that will help you do just
that!
